Process Paper
The theme of this year's National History Day is turning points in history, so our topic would take a lot of thought, as we would need to search for an event in history that was hugely influential. Our group thought about different groups of people throughout the world (black, latino, asian, Native American) and different points in time that changed these groups forever. When we decided on doing a Native American topic, we researched "events in history that changed Native Americans". Many results came up but only one caught our eye. This was the Trial Of Standing Bear. That is how our group went about choosing our topic for National History Day.
Our group conducted our research through the uses of as many different types of sources as possible. We found books in the library and websites and databases on the internet. Our group used these different sources to get background information about all aspects of the Case of Standing Bear. We also used the sources to support our thought on how this case was a turning point in the rights of Native Americans. That is how our group conducted our research.
Of the many available options we had to present our history project, we chose to make a website. We chose this because we thought it would be the best way to get our point across and put all the information necessary right in front of the viewer's eyes. We felt that we would not be able to get the point across as to why our project is a turning point if we did a movie, play, or exhibit. We thought that through making a website, we would be able to clearly show exactly how the Trial of Standing Bear is a turning point for Native American rights. That is why we chose to create a website for our National History Day project.
Since this year's theme is turning points in history, my group chose a topic that directly demonstrates this for Native Americans. The Trial of Standing Bear is a turning point for Native Americans because it gave them more rights and benefits. It got them recognized as people by the United States and they received the right to protection and many other rights of the United States of America. It could very well be that because of this case, only a few years later, The United States allowed them to become citizens. That is how our topic relates to the theme of turning points in history.
