In 1879, Standing Bear, the chief of the Ponca tribe of Nebraska, attempted to return his dead son to their homeland after being moved from their land to Native American territory in Oklahoma. When the chief was arrested for leaving without permission, he took a stand against the government in court, and argued for his people's rights, thus sparking what is known to be one of the greatest turning points in Native American history.
